Plantages PortoMari has several hiking trails that provide hours of exploring-pleasure. Of course we used the natural paths that were already there to make sure we did not harm the environment. The Seru Matteo Trail, the Historical Trail and Bird Watching trail all start at Playa PortoMari. You can leave your car at the parking lot. Most of the trails are also available for mountain bikes, but make sure you have a few essential spare parts because it can be a long walk back if you get a flat tire!
The Seru Matteo 1.9 mile lollypop loop trail is located at the north end of the parking lot at PortoMari and will take you about half an hour to walk. It is an adventurous nature trail that takes hikers to the top of 187ft. Matthew’s Hill. From the top the hiker is rewarded with incredible views of Playa PortoMari –a stunning vista of white sands and aquamarine waters- as well as views of the surrounding landscape. Along the trail, you are likely to encounter lizards, iguanas, birds and many interesting plants.
If you are more interested in the Icterus Nigrogularis or Chlorostilbon Mellisugus, then you can walk the Bird Watch Trail that will take you approximately 1.5 hours. If you are lucky you will see the yellow troepiaal and the green humming bird passing by while you are standing on the Bird Watch Towers. You are also likely to encounter warawaras (eagles), parakeets, kinikini and falki (falcons), or wild pigs and flocks of goats.
The History Trail brings you back 300 years in time and will take approximately 3 hours to walk.
The history of the estate starts in 1684, and was called Puerto Maria back then. You will walk the same route as the slaves walked from the mansion to the ‘magazina’ (storage place). You will have the feeling you traveled back in time as the ruins are still there.
